📡 About the Exchange Rates

This calculator uses live exchange rates from the European Central Bank (ECB) via the Frankfurter open API. Rates are published daily on ECB business days.

  • Rates shown are mid-market rates — the midpoint between buy and sell rates.
  • Banks and money transfer services add a spread or fee on top of the mid-market rate.
  • For the best transfer rate, compare providers like Wise, Revolut, and your bank before sending money.
  • Rates update every business day — weekends and ECB holidays use the last available rate.

💡 Tips to Get the Best Exchange Rate

  1. Use the mid-market rate as your benchmark — this is the fairest rate, shown in this calculator. Anything worse than this is a fee in disguise.
  2. Avoid airport and hotel exchange counters — they typically charge 10–15% above the mid-market rate.
  3. Compare transfer services before sending money — Wise, Revolut, and similar services often offer rates much closer to mid-market than banks.
  4. Watch for "zero commission" claims — providers that claim no commission often embed their profit in a poor exchange rate instead.
  5. Pay in local currency when abroad — when card machines offer to charge you in your home currency, always decline (this is Dynamic Currency Conversion, often with 3–5% markup).
  6. Send larger amounts less often — most services charge a fixed fee per transfer, so one larger transfer beats multiple small ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do the exchange rates come from?

Rates are sourced from the European Central Bank (ECB) via the open Frankfurter API. The ECB publishes reference rates on every business day at approximately 16:00 CET. These are mid-market rates used as an international benchmark — they are not buy/sell rates from a bank or broker.

What is the mid-market exchange rate?

The mid-market rate (also called the interbank rate) is the midpoint between the buy and sell rates on the global currency market. It's the fairest rate available and is used as the international benchmark. Banks and exchange services typically add a "spread" or markup on top of the mid-market rate — this spread is their profit. This calculator shows you the mid-market rate so you can see how much markup any provider is charging.

How often are the exchange rates updated?

The ECB publishes rates once per business day — approximately 16:00 Central European Time, Monday to Friday. On weekends and ECB public holidays, the most recent available rate is used. For real-time tick-by-tick rates (like those used in forex trading), you would need a live market data feed.

Why is the rate I get at the bank different?

Banks and exchange services buy and sell currencies at different prices — they buy low and sell high. The difference is called the "spread." On top of the spread, many providers also charge a flat fee or commission. The mid-market rate shown here is the midpoint — the gap between what the calculator shows and what your bank offers is essentially the total cost of the exchange.

Does this calculator store my data?

No. The only external request made is to fetch exchange rates from the Frankfurter/ECB API — no personal data is sent. Your amount, currency choices, and results exist only in your browser and are never saved or logged anywhere.

How is currency conversion calculated?

The formula is: Converted Amount = Amount × Exchange Rate. All rates are first expressed relative to USD (the base currency). To convert between two non-USD currencies, the calculator cross-rates through USD: Rate(A→B) = Rate(USD→B) ÷ Rate(USD→A). Example: to convert EUR to GBP, it calculates (USD→GBP rate) ÷ (USD→EUR rate).
